Mathematics Department PhilosophyThe mathematics department at Assumption High School strives to provide the tools to prepare students for everyday living and to develop logical thinkers and problem solvers. Technology will be used to strengthen concepts and increase understanding. The department provides a standards-based curriculum that incorporates a variety of teaching strategies for successfully teaching mathematics. It relates mathematics to real world situations and careers at every opportunity and it seeks to provide an atmosphere where students learn to enjoy mathematics. Department Goals and Objectives
Goal #1: To develop logical thinkers and problem solvers.
Objective 1.1: Provide consistent opportunities for critical thinking in homework assignments and on tests.
Objective 1.2: Provide problems that can be solved by multiple methods: graphically, numerically, and analytically.
Objective 1.3: Provide problems that require a combination of problem-solving techniques to complete.
Goal #2: To provide students with appropriate technology to enhance their learning. Objective 2.1: Instruct students on how to use the functions of the graphing calculator; use TI-Smartview software in order to demonstrate these functions to students. Objective 2.2: Use calculator/computer programs in class – especially those connected to SMART, Texas-Instruments and Office technologies – that will help students to understand the material more clearly. Objective 2.3: Provide problems of sufficient complexity that use of technology is appropriate to their solution. Goal #3: To help students make connections with other courses and applications outside the classroom. Objective 3.1: Provide at least one project each year for every course that deals with an application beyond what we are studying in the classroom.
Objective 3.2: Offer students career information about what types of careers use math and how it is used.
Objective 3.3: Provide preparation for standardized tests such as the PLAN, ACT, SAT.
